Fred Shanks Memorial Scholarship

Major in the College of Agriculture

This scholarship was established in 1955 in memory of Fred L. Shanks, a community and agricultural leader who was a partner in the Mills Orchards Corporation in Hamilton City, where he began working in 1917 after attending the University of California (Berkeley) College of Agriculture. He rose from the position of foreman to become general superintendent. In 1945 he joined James Mills and Alfred Tisch as a partner. He was active in numerous state and local organizations, including the Northern California Growers Farm Labor Association, the California Beet Growers Association, Masonic Lodge, Elks Lodge, Commonwealth Club, and Chico Rotary. He also served as chairman of the Hamilton Union Elementary School Board, and was an executive board member of the Boy Scouts’ Mount Lassen Area Council. He was active in the newly formed agriculture program at Chico State as chairman of the Agriculture Committee. He had two children, a son, Fred Shanks, who passed away, and a daughter, Barbara Copeland, who lives in Chico.
