Monty Betty Art Studio Scholarship

Students must be in the Art Studio program with a focus on one of the following: Ceramics, Painting and Drawing, or Sculpture. If no students meet the criteria in an award cycle, the pool of applicants may be opened to students in any focus in the Art Studio Major.

Monty Betty was born in Chico, CA on July 11th, 1952. he attended many of the schools in Chico as his dad was a building contractor and he would build a house, they would live in it and sell it and then move to a different house. Month’s dad was an innovative builder, building the first curved wall houses in the Chico area.

While a senior at Pleasant Valley in Chico, Monty created a plaque for the winner of the football Almond Bowl, played each year between Chico High and Pleasant Valley. In college, Monty attended CSUC as well as Butte College in the Butte County area. He majored in Art with an emphasis in wood carving and painting and drawing.

In 1975, Monty studied and obtained his Contractor’s License and started his own business, Monty Betty Construction. MOnty spent 40 years in Chico, designing and building high-end homes using his wood artistic skills, carving many staircases, cabinets and molding throughout his houses.

Monty and wife Kathy had three daughters – all of which including Kathy attended CSUC and obtained degrees. His youngest child followed in his footsteps with a degree in Studio Art with an emphasis in drawing, painting, and ceramics.
