This scholarship, originally named the McGowan Ranches Scholarship, was established by Harry McGowan in 1996. After he passed away, his family re-named the fund the Harry W. McGowan, Jr. Memorial Scholarship. Harry’s father, an attorney in Willows, received property from a rancher-client, rather than a cash payment. Harry and his brother Clay fought in WWII and another brother, Robert, worked the farm. Eventually, the brothers all worked in agriculture. They bought the Baker Ranch near Butte City, which is now a bird refuge. The family grows rice, prunes and almonds.
