Ranko’s parents, Dirk and Mira Moeller and other family members established the Ranko Moeller Memorial Scholarship to honor his memory by providing support to students who, like Ranko, blossom during their year in GST. When the GST program ended, the scholarship was revised to support students enrolled in the Honors Survey of Civilization (HSC) in the GE Honors Program, since HSC preserves the curricular kernel of GST.

Ranko Moeller, a quiet and shy student in the GST class of 1985-86, was also an aspiring bicycle racer who frequently rode with riders who eventually became the founding members of Chico Velo. Through his riding and his GST experience Ranko’s confidence grew and he became more outspoken in the classroom. One day he memorably stood up for the class, earning the gratitude and admiration of many, by doing a recitation of a poem which everyone had been assigned to memorize. The professor had asked if anyone would care to recite the poem; no one volunteered. So the professor called on Ranko, the quiet kid with his face buried in his notebook in the back of the room, obviously trying to pass under the radar. Ranko stood and rattled off the poem without a stutter or a pause. Many students looked relieved, thanks to Ranko. Tragically, Ranko was killed in an accident during a mountain bike ride.
