Garrett Gibson Memorial Botany Scholarship

    This endowed scholarship was created as a memorial to Garrett Eaton Gibson, a much loved brother and son. Garrett had many accomplishments in his life and overcame many challenges while living with epilepsy.
Garrett attended Lowell High School in San Francisco and received his bachelors of Science degree in Biology from the University of California, Davis in 1989. Garrett received his Masters in Botany from the California State University, Chico in 1997. Garrett was a member of the Life Scouts, BSA Troop 14 in San Francisco, he was a member of the California Native Plant Society and the Rare Plant Chairperson for the Mount Lassen Chapter, a member of the Nature Conservancy, Butte Environmental Council, Chico’s Folk Dancing Group and a member of the Omicron Theta Epsilonas Chico State Honor Society. Garrett’s master thesis was on the physical, anatomical and environmental factors influencing seed germination in three species of Astragales L. (FABACEAE) from Plumas County, California. Throughout his work on his thesis, Garrett worked for the National Forest Service in Bairsden, CA. Once finished with his thesis Garrett was studying the Vernal Pools for the Big Chico Creek Watershed Alliance. Garrett inherited his love and passion for Botany from his Great Uncle Samuel Houston Baker who cross bred award winning lilies. May this scholarship help future graduate students to pursue their love and passion for the study of Botany.
