James Gerber grew up in Chico, California. He attended local schools before earning his undergraduate degree in History (1974) and Economics from CSU, Chico, and a PhD in Economics from UC Davis (1986). While in college student, Dr. Gerber worked seasonally as a wildland firefighter in the Lassen National Forest and the Shasta-Trinity National Forest to pay for his undergraduate and graduate studies. After completing his PhD, he moved south to join the Economics Department at San Diego State University where he taught until he retired in 2019. In addition to his role as a Professor of Economics, Dr. Gerber was for many years the Director of Latin American Studies and a visiting scholar at several universities in Mexico and Canada. He is the author of a popular textbook, International Economics, as well as several other books and co-edited books, articles, and book chapters. His research mainly focuses on US-Mexico economics relations and the economics of integration in the US-Mexico border region.
