Sarah lived a full if brief life. She graduated posthumously from Chico State University at the age of 19, receiving honors in her majors, History and Political Science. Although obviously very bright, the qualities, which characterized her, were her warm and loving nature, her enjoyment of family and friends and most of all a sense of inner poise. Sarah seemed “together”, a self-assurance, which came from having a good understanding of herself and of what she wanted to do and be at that stage of her life.
In her short years, she had several cultural experiences, which were very broadening. One was a summer class through CSUC in Florence, Italy. There she studied art and art history, traveling also through much of Italy. On her way home she met her father in London and they explored that city and then on to Edinburgh, seeing part of the Scottish country where some of her great grandparents had come from. She also spent a winter holiday in New York state with some of her classmates, as well as a lengthy trip through British Columbia with family. We are not certain what her next steps were to be, but it probably would have been attending law school. She dies suddenly from meningitis at age 19. She loved and was very much loved by her classmates, her professors and her family. We hope the recipients of this award will enhance their education and lives by receiving it, a true memorial to Sarah’s life. Sarah Libby Mahood , 1961 – 1981.
