The family and friends of Michael J. Gills, alum and professor emeritus of history, established this scholarship in his memory to honor of his dedication to students and teaching. Professor Gillis was received a Masters Degree in history at Chico State in 1979 and began teaching in 1981. He was a highly regarded instructor, and a well-known local historian who co-authored John Bidwell’s California: Observations and Reflections of a Pioneer, 1841-1900. This scholarship supports students pursuing a degree in history and who demonstrate academic potential.
