Melitta T. Singer Memorial Scholarship

• First preference: German major or minor
• Second preference, History major or minor
• If there is no eligible student majoring or minoring in German or History, the scholarship will not be awarded.
• Minimum overall gpa 3.0
• Financial need not required unless two candidates equal in all other criteria, then it can be the determining factor.

This scholarship was established in memory of Frau Melitta Theresa Singer and to honor her heritage by providing support to deserving students pursuing a degree with a German major or minor. Melitta Singer was born in 1922 and grew up in the Sudetenland. She received a “middling” sort of education from a German high school that prepares students to attend an university. World War II intervened and Melitta spent the war years in Berlin, working for the German Red Cross in overnight children’s bomb shelters. She began a collection of books and continued after she fled Berlin in 1945. Melitta was able to teach her daughter how to read with her set of more than eighty books. She passed away on August 13, 2007.
