From John E. Conner: I had a severe head injury during my first year of high school. I was partially paralyzed on my right side and lost part of the vision in my right eye. Eventually I lost my eye. I had a very difficult time when I returned to high school. I was taking college prep courses before the accident, but I was not ready to resume that strenuous source of study when I returned. However, I graduated from high school during the summer of 1960 after my class graduated that spring. I attended City College of San Francisco and made up most of my deficiencies and graduated in 1963. I then went on to Chico State College, majored in Recreation Administration, and graduated in 1966. After graduation I went to work for the Oakland Recreation Department for one year, and then I went to work for the city and county of San Francisco, where I have worked for the past twenty-five years. I have held various positions with the city and county including Recreation Director, Municipal Stadium Manager, Senior Management Assistant, and Assistant Public Guardian. I attended graduate school part time, while working full time, and I have earned two masters degrees. My first masters degree was in Recreation and Leisure Studies from San Francisco State College and the second was in Public Administration from Golden Gate University.
