John Smale Economics Scholarship for Excellence in Economics

• Major: Economics
• Recipent must show contributions to the Economics Department as well as academic excellence.
• May apply in sophomore year but must be a junior in the fall when the scholarship is to disburse.
• Seniors must have at least 2 remaining semesters before graduation.

This scholarship was established to support outstanding students majoring in economics. Dr. John Smale, professor emeritus of economics, came to Chico State in 1942. He taught at Fresno High School and went back to Cal Berkley graduate school. President Aymer Jay Hamilton hired him to teach at Chico State. He later became the first chair of the newly established Department of Economics during the 1960’s and retired in 1968.
