In the autumn of 1954, two women who had recently had a brief experience in Japan met in Chico and became friends. Mrs. George Eastham had responded to General MacArthur’s request that American Service wives help orient the Japanese wives of American men toward the new life that would greet them. Miss Alice Anderson had taught for two years and was aware of the great need of college opportunities for international students. They created a General Douglas MacArthur Education fund to award one annual scholarship in 1955.
