This scholarship is established in memory of Leona Dickey Van Antwerp, who spent her adult life helping children. The intent of this scholarship is to help others continue the kind of work done by Mrs. Van Antwerp. She spent thirty-three years in the field of education in Sutter County serving as a speech therapist. She developed programs for special education and became the first Director of Special Education for Sutter County. Mrs. Van Antwerp was also the first principal of the Butte Vista School which was built to accommodate the needs of children with learning disabilities.
