Miss Beatrice G. Kempf established this scholarship endowment in honor of her grandfather and father. John Kempf Sr. and Jr. were pioneers in Chico in the late 1800’s. Kempf Sr. was born in Germany in 1830, settling in Ohio in 1844. In 1852, gold fever brought him to the American River to earn his fortune. He later opened a butcher shop in Chico, as requested by General John Bidwell. John Jr. was born in 1859 and lived to be over 100 years old. He worked in the gas industry for PG & E. Upon retirement, his hobbies were gardening and bee keeping. John Kempf’s motto was “don’t’ hurry, don’t worry, and practice the Golden Rule.”
