Russell Edward Brainard was born May 13, 1985, and sadly he passed away from brain cancer on March 10, 2007, at the age of 21. He was diagnosed with cancer when he was a student at Chico State. Because of his hard work and stubborn determination to complete his degree, he received a certificate of achievement towards a BS in Recreation and Parks Management just prior to his death. He taught his family and friends unforgettable lessons about love, courage and making the most of every moment. His family and friends established this scholarship to honor Russell’s memory by helping other young people who are struggling to achieve their educational goals in the face of financial, health or language barriers.
