This scholarship was established to assist nursing students with financial need in their professional development . Lyla Hammock was born and raised on a ranch in Waterford, CA but later moved to Modesto, CA. Lyla completed her nurse’s training at San Joaquin Country General Hospital, near Stockton. During WWI, Lyla was commissioned and served with the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. She was scheduled for overseas duty, but ended up instead working in the United States with servicemen who were guaranteed during the influenza epidemic. After 1924, she was very accomplished working with various hospitals including, Red River Lumber Company’s Hospital, Oroville Curran Hospital and Enloe Hospital. Lyla had worked as a nurse, private-duty nurse, and a night supervisor until her retirement in the mid-1960’s. Lyla had a strong and continuing interest in her profession.
