The Natividad G. Lucero Scholarship was established in 1990 in memory of the Dr. Nancy Barcel√≥’s maternal grandmother. Dr. Nancy Barcel√≥ wishes to honor her grandmother by providing scholarship support to students who are pursuing Chicano Studies and who are actively engaged in working on behalf of a Latino community. Her grandmother was a strong woman and a storyteller, who raised 12 children, and was widowed at 42. She helped to raise Dr. Barcel√≥ for the first few years of her life, caring for her when she had polio. Her grandmother had a great impact on Dr. Barcel√≥’s life, predicting she would follow a career path dedicated to education. Rewarding students who value education and who will have a positive impact on Latino communities is Dr. Barcel√≥’s tribute to her grandmother, Natividad G. Lucero, recognizing the value of her grandmother’s stories, and appreciating her role in developing her identity and an understanding of her cultural roots.
Dr. Barceló received her BA in Social Work from Chico State, an MA in Recreational Education and a PhD in Higher Education Administration from the University of Iowa. During her thirty year career in higher education, Dr. Barceló has made significant contributions and has had a life-long commitment to fostering diversity. She is currently the President of Northern New Mexico College.
