John Wannop is considered one of the historical figures of Chico. He moved from England to Chico to join his uncle, William Proud, who was fired by General John Bidwell, the founder of Chico. William Proud was trained in horticulture and ornithology in England. Wannop joined Proud in his work, planting rare trees and shrubs on the Bidwell grounds, much of which is now Chico State. John met Josie Eddy and got married on March 30, 1892. The Wannop’s decided to live with the Eddy’s in their house which was deed to Josie for $1 a few years later. The Eddy’s built this 11-room residence on 1,600 acres in 1877 and is where John Bidwell spent his first night in Butte County. After John Wannop operated the acreage, he converted the land into orchards, especially almonds and prunes. John Wannop also had a sincere love of birds and raised white turkeys, guinea hens and peacocks on the land. Before he died, he gave his birds and birds eggs, which had been collected in England and Chico, to Chico State. John never lost interest in the Bidwell’s nor Chico State and at the time of his death, decided to support both by donating money. When John died, the carpets, heavy drapery, butler’s halltree, gold picture frames, and other articles were given to the Bidwell Mansion for use.
